Sewn with gold thread. This is how Yves Saint Laurent’s career could be summed up, from the creation of his brand in 1961 to his retirement from the catwalks in 2002 before his death in 2008. He is part of this generation of great couturiers famous far beyond the small fashion circle, so much so that the retrospectives dedicated to him began during his life. From 14 October 2022, yet another exhibition on his work will be held in Paris that could be worth a visit, until it closes on 14 May 2023: “Gold. Yves Saint Laurent’s golds”.

“Gold. Yves Saint Laurent’s golds”, the new YSL exhibition in Paris
His first parade, on January 29, 1962, had opened on a navy blue wool pea coat with golden buttons. Since then it has been a detail that has studded his work, be it other buttons, but also lamé fabrics, sumptuous embroideries, above all costume jewelery, chains and, of course, the famous logo that seals the initials, YSL, designed by the artist -graphic Adolphe Mouron known as “Cassandre”.
In this exhibition, more thematic than retrospective, there are about forty haute couture and prêt-à-porter creations.. There are also countless accessories. More surprising, in particular, stands out a braid of hair covered with gold threads, worn by the bride who closes the autumn-winter 1967 show. But also the famous first bottles of the Champagne perfume, released in 1993, immediately withdrawn from sale due to of the sparkling wine lobby dissatisfied with this misleading name, before being renamed Yvresse in 1996.

The dazzling richness of Yves Saint Laurent’s ornaments
For his gilded ornaments, Yves Saint Laurent was inspired by both academic art and pharaohs., Cleopatra and maharaja, but also pop stars of her time like Johnny Hallyday or Sylvie Vartan. Dazzling, it therefore represents this chrono-thematic exhibition another way to retrace her career, which will satisfy fashion aficionados as well as art and gold aficionados.
