October 13 is celebrated as Bra Free Day all over the world. On this date, millions of women around the world deliberately refuse to wear a bra to draw public attention to the problem of the spread of breast cancer. In fact, the holiday has many meanings, and the wardrobe itself has managed to gain a certain reputation over the centuries.
For some, it became the personification of outdated social norms and female slavery, while for others it became the main symbol of protest and the engine of the sexual revolution. Designer Josie Bathory explains the philosophy: “One woman says, ‘I used to set my bra on fire and now I’m going to make a poster out of it.’
The struggle for gender equality and getting rid of tight bras began in the 1960s with a protest against a decree requiring college students to wear bras in the United States. This later developed into a full-fledged movement.

Hundreds of girls took to the streets shouting loud slogans and demanding to leave the female body alone. The ardent activists have even created the “Freedom Trash” in which they want to burn objects that impose false standards of beauty. These items included false eyelashes, curlers, corsets and, of course, bras. On the Internet and now you can find archive photos of girls proudly holding a bra in their raised hands.

And a few years later (in 1969) the whole world saw the legendary braless appearance of Jane Birkin at the premiere of the movie “Slogan”. She said of the little black dress: “I didn’t know it was this sheer. This is camera flash effect. If I had known, I wouldn’t have worn panties!”

Later, other style icons deliberately rejected the bra: Kate Moss, Patti Smith, Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardashian, Bella Hadid and Rihanna. Speaking of the latter, I’d like to recall her iconic “naked” entry to the Council of Fashion Designers awards and a biting response to a journalist’s question about her breasts. “Is my chest bothering you? Swarovski crystal-clad girl!” said the bad girl Riri.

To reject a bra or not is every girl’s personal decision. No one forbids wearing beautiful underwear for show anymore, and no one has the right to condemn their absence, either. Remember, your body is your business. This philosophy is actively propagated by famous actresses, models, singers and influencers through images on the red carpet and in everyday life. We’ve gathered photos of 20 stars who ignore the bra and do it in style.
