Paralympic swimming champion Ellie Simmonds has been announced for this year’s competition. Come strictly to danceShe said she is delighted to be the first contestant with dwarfism to attend the show.
The contest will be back for its 20th year in September and Simmonds told the BBC that he was savoring the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: “I’m so excited, I just want to enjoy every second and try on the sequins and costumes..
“I’ll be the first dwarf to do this show and I just want to show how positive it is: being different is good.”
In 2008, Simmonds became Britain’s youngest athlete to compete in the Summer Paralympics (she was 13 at the time) and was named BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year that same year.
He won two gold medals at these Games, two more at the London Paralympics and a fifth in Rio in 2016.
He has since commented on sport and directed two documentaries, including Eli Simmonds: A world without dwarfs?
