Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired the North American rights to the winner of the Cannes 2022 Jury Prize. eight mountains for a theatrical release later in the year.
New York-based distribution partners have kept Cannes busy this year, also acquiring Jerzy Skolimowski. EOwho shared the jury prize eight mountains; and Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne’s Tory and Lokita, which won the 75th anniversary award at Cannes.
eight mountains Written and directed by Oscar-nominated Belgian director Felix van Groeningen and his collaborator and life partner Charlotte Vandermeer.
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Italian writer Paolo Cognet, the play follows the lifelong friendship of two people of very different origins, set against the backdrop of a remote valley in the mountainous region of the Aosta Valley in Italy. One is a city boy, the other is the last child of a forgotten mountain town.
As adults, the two go their separate ways, but fate brings them back together on their childhood playground and they discover what it means to be true friends for life.
The Italian-language film is produced by Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Gangarossa at Wildside, a Fremantle branch in Rome, in association with the Belgian Rufus and Menuetto, the French Pyramide Pictures and the Italian Vision Distribution, in association with the British Elastic and Sky.
Vision Distribution is handling international sales and the Italian release. Pyramid will be released in France.
“We found the perfect home for our film and we know that this story will touch the lives of people around the world,” said Van Groeningen and VanderMeersch.
The film stars Luca Marinelli and Alessandro Borg together with Filippo Timi, Elena Lietti and Elisabetta Mazzullo.

The deal was brokered by CAA Media Finance and Vision Distribution on behalf of directors with Janus Films and Sideshow.
