Oscar-winning Gladiator star Russell Crowe did not appear in the second part of the film, despite his sincere efforts. He wanted to revive Maximus on the big screen.
According to director Ridley Scott, Crowe wanted a sequel. The actor wasn’t even embarrassed by the death of his character in the 2000 film adaptation. “Russell and I thought about this about 18 years ago. There was Nick Cave writing the script and I was saying to Russell, “You’re dead.” And he answered: “I know that I am dead. And I want to come back from the dead,” Scott said in a recent interview with People.
Crowe commissioned the script for the sequel from musician Nick Cave, asking him to come up with a move that would give him a chance to return. Cave came up with the idea that Maximus’ soul would reincarnate into the body of another warrior during the battle. However, Crowe did not like this option because his character would still be played by another actor. Although Ridley Scott considered Russell Crowe a great actor, he did not plan to raise Maximus from the dead.
