Concrete was produced from coffee grounds in Russia

Scientists from Don State Technical University produced biochar-based concrete from coffee grounds. According to them, this development allows reducing cement consumption by approximately 10% and improving the quality of concrete. The results are presented in Recycling.

A still from the movie “There Are Rumors”

Approximately two kilograms of waste are generated when producing one kilogram of instant coffee. Thus, approximately 14 million tons of coffee industry waste can be generated from the 7 million tons of coffee produced annually in the world.

Researchers said organic products such as coffee grounds should not be added directly to concrete as they release substances that weaken the building material. So the scientists heated it to 400°C to remove the oxygen. They then grind it to create a porous, carbon-rich coal called biochar.

If you are far from science, we recommend you do a trend experiment on your boyfriend. You can test how much he loves you thanks to the coffee in him.
