100-year-old Kathleen Pearce from Wexford believes the secret to longevity is hard work and good food. The Independent learned this while he was celebrating his birthday.

Since her retirement, the Irish woman enjoys spending time in her greenhouse and keeping her sane by reading the daily newspaper, solving crosswords and keeping up with current events in the country and the world. When asked about the secret of living long, he said: “Your health is your wealth and I am very lucky that I have not experienced such pain.”
The birthday girl celebrated her anniversary surrounded by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who came to her from all over the world. Kathleen was born in Tipperary on 5 November 1924. He left the city in his youth to train as a telephone operator.
