In honor of his fortieth birthday, Pavel Durov shared on his Telegram channel the story of creating a social network that he could safely call his own child for the first time. The site turns 18 this year.
Pavel said that the idea of \u200b\u200bcreating a social network came to his mind immediately after graduating from university. “I wanted to keep in touch with my former classmates, but I knew it would be difficult without a website. “At the end of August 2006, I decided to create a social network for university students and graduates,” writes Durov.
The young man set a very tight deadline: only one month. By then he already had the code but still turned to a more experienced programmer. He hired his brother Nikolai as an expert.
In September 2006, 22-year-old Pavel was working 20 hours a day on the project. Then he ate and slept for about 10 hours. “I would make myself a bucket of pasta and eat it with lots of cheese. There was no need for any other food. I didn’t care if it was day or night. The creator of social networks said that social connections have ceased to exist.
He showed particular persistence in working on the details. That’s why he couldn’t complete the project on time. All this time Durov worked alone at the construction site. My brother was interested in science and found programming unworthy of his dignity, so he mostly did consulting.
The second developer joined Pavel only when about a million subscribers signed up for the new social network.
VKontakte started working not after a month, but after six weeks. In addition to his classmates, Pavel invited users from the previous project, which appeared three years ago.
