
Ian McKellen, who plays the wizard Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings, revealed a secret to fans. He told Gandalf who gave him his characteristics.
McKellen is the only “Gandalf” in the entire history of film adaptations of JRR’s books. Tolkien’s films that received Oscar nominations. In fact, 11 years ago, the film’s director, Peter Jackson, implied that he based the actor’s performance on Tolkien’s voice and mannerisms. Years later Ian confirmed this fact.
“We found a recording of Tolkien reading The Hobbit. It was very helpful to hear his velvety professorial voice. After all, he was a university teacher!” McKellen told Entertainment Weekly.
Recently Ian McKellen expressed his interest in possibly returning to the role in future films. He hopes to appear in at least the movie “The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’s Hunt,” which will be released in 2026.
