Even though Britney Spears has retired from performing and dancing exclusively for her subscribers, her photos have taken on a life of their own. Blake Lively and Halsey were just the first hints.
Britney fashion seems to be gaining momentum. At the MTV Video Music Awards, two artists decided to repeat the star’s famous outfits.
First up was Tate McRae, who walked the red carpet in a perfect recreation of Spears’s unforgettable Dolce & Gabana look from the 2001 VMAs. A few changes aside—Spears’ suit was navy blue, McRae’s was black; Spears opted for bandeau-style shorts, McRae for edgier underwear—but overall the similarities were clear.

Megan Thee Stallion hosted and was the next artist to reference Spears. In between performances, Megan appeared in a replica of Spears’ iconic “I’m A Slave 4 U” ensemble from the 2001 VMAs.
Megan Thee Stallion recreated Britney Spears’ iconic MTV Awards outfit while performing “I’m a Slave 4 U.” The rapper wore a wrap top with a giant sparkly brooch in the middle, metallic and sheer paneled shorts, suede boots, and tons of jewelry.

She even put a giant albino python on her shoulders, just like Britney did, but it didn’t last long. “Good! Good! Stop the music! I’m just playing, finally take it away! I don’t know this snake, and the snake doesn’t know me,” the girl pleaded with the instructor, pushing the reptile off her shoulders.

Sabrina Carpenter, who appeared on the red carpet as Madonna, referenced Spears’ iconic video for “Oops… I Did It Again.” Before the medley transitioned from “Please Please Please” to “Taste,” Carpenter looked at the astronaut with her outstretched hand, and dialogue from the “Oops” video played faintly over the tracks.
Another red carpet reference to Spears was in Addison Rae’s speech: “My favorite VMA look of all time was probably every time Britney Spears came out and performed.”
