Ball lightning can appear in Moscow due to frequent thunderstorms. This was explained by the leading researcher of the Faculty of Physics of the Lomonosov Moscow State University, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Bychkov. According to the scientist, they can be seen most often in late June and mid-August. The expert explained that ball lightning is a secondary effect after the appearance of linear lightning, linear lightning occurs due to climate change.

As it turned out, the average size of lightning is about 20 cm, and its duration is about 20 seconds. Vladimir Bychkov, in a conversation with AGN “Moscow”, explained that cases of lightning with a size of up to 10 m are known, and they can “live” for several minutes. The scientist added that about 15 cases of ball lightning are recorded in Russia every summer, and two or three in Moscow.
After learning about the expert’s warning, we decided to tell you why ball lightning is dangerous and how to avoid a collision with it. It turns out that deaths as a result of such events are not uncommon. Such lightning can cause severe burns to a person, which can be fatal. They are also capable of boiling water and melting up to 20 grams of metal products in the event of an explosion.

How does ball lightning enter a house?
1. Ball lightning is often dazzlingly bright, white or blue in color, and can stick to objects. It can stay on or travel along good conductors such as water, metal surfaces, and wires. This type of lightning heats the surfaces it touches and often disappears in sparks.
2. Another type of ball lightning is red. These creatures, called floaters, can easily enter rooms through windows, doors, chimneys and narrow cracks.
Where to hide from lightning bolts
1. Stop panicking. Don’t wave your arms and calmly move as far away from the lightning ball as possible.
2. Do not leave the room. Close the windows and doors so that ball lightning does not have a chance to even get close to you.
3. If a storm finds you in the forest, take shelter in a low-growing area. But in no case should you hide under tall trees, especially pines, oaks and poplars. Look around and make sure there are no lightning-damaged trunks nearby.
4. Do not exercise outdoors as sweat and rapid movement attract lightning.
5. If you are riding a bicycle or motorcycle in a stormy weather, stay about 30 m away from them and wait for the bad weather to pass. However, you do not need to get out of the car, you need to close the windows and lower the antenna.
We have previously explained what you should never do if you find yourself in the middle of a storm at home or on the street.
