Alec Baldwin appeared in court in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The actor is charged with manslaughter in the 2021 shooting death of camerawoman Galina Hutchins.

The first hearing of the Baldwin case began with the opening statement of prosecutor Erlinda Johnson. She stated that the artist’s “reckless behavior” on the set of the film “Rust” led to the death of the cameraman. According to the prosecutor, playing with weapons violates safety regulations and endangers the lives of others. She stated that Alec will be proven guilty of committing the crime.
“On the day of the accident, the defendant failed to examine the weapon, thereby violating established safety regulations,” Johnson said.

Baldwin took notes and sat with his head bowed as the prosecutor spoke. The artist’s lawyer said he had been carrying a gun, as was customary on set. Prosecutors “have no evidence of actual murder,” he said.
“Not a day goes by that we don’t wish Alec had saved his life. But witnesses will tell you that there has never been a time in history when an actor caught a live bullet in a fake gun. It was an unthinkable tragedy.” Baldwin’s lawyer stressed that he had committed no crime, adding that justice would be served.
Alec insisted he didn’t pull the trigger and didn’t know why the gun had live ammunition in it. The artist has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter charges, but Baldwin could reportedly face up to 18 months in prison if the victim proves otherwise.
