Are you one of those people who has significantly reduced their clothing budget since using a second-hand peer-to-peer resale site? Vinted revealed on June 18, 2024 the results of its Impact Report, produced in collaboration with Vaayu (an environmental impact reduction software for commerce). Enough to lay out key figures on how such a popular second-hand platform contributes (or not) to reducing everyone’s ecological footprint.
Consume less but better, for your budget and for the planet
For this study, the platform interviewed more than 100,000 Vinted members in France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and the United Kingdom. The result is that many are trying to consume less, but better, which is good for the budget and the planet.
Thus, 40% of members in France own a wardrobe made up mainly of second-hand items. Better : 25% of members in France are purchasing fewer fashion items since using Vinted (compared to 19% across Europe). And 53% of members say they spend less money on fashion items since they started shopping on Vinted. According to this new impact report, in 2023, Vinted members were able to save 679 kilotons of CO₂ emissions by favoring used over new.
Second hand, qualitatively equal to new according to 84% of Vinties
Another pleasant conclusion: second-hand has become the first choice for many members, since “ 20% of them say they would buy second-hand products, even if they were sold at the same price as new ones », reports the Lithuanian second-hand giant.
Moreover, 84% of Vinties believe that the quality of a garment purchased on the platform is identical to that of a new garment. This is bittersweet information, as it demonstrates both the trivialization of second-hand shopping, but also how we are able to buy new and immediately resell them second-hand. Enough to make you want to talk about the fast-fashionization of this second market.

This Vinted impact report also highlights some generational trends. Generation Z (born between 1995 and 2010) would be the most likely to save the money earned by reselling items on Vinted. While millennials (born between 1980 and 1995) prefer to reinvest their resale profits in a new second-hand item.
