Hospitalizations for suicide attempts and self-harm are exploding among adolescents

The mental health of adolescents and young women is experiencing a sudden worsening, indicates a study by Public Health France which reports the increase in hospital admissions for attempted suicide and self-mutilation.

On Thursday 16 May, a new study carried out by the studies and statistics department of the French social ministries (Drees) and public health highlighted a worsening “brutal and unprecedented” of young women’s mental health from 2007 to 2022. Hospitalizations for suicide attempts and self-mutilation are therefore sharply increasing, especially after the end of the Covid crisis. These results are “consistent with field observations » health workers who have been warning about this phenomenon for several years.

An increase that especially affects teenage girls

Based on national health system data, the study paints a particularly alarming picture, especially when it comes to the mental health of adolescent girls. “In medicine and surgery, the average rate of hospitalizations for self-inflicted procedures increased by 71% in 2021-2022 compared to 2010-2019 for girls aged 10-14, and by 44% for those aged 15-19 years, within 21 years % between 20-24 years. The surge in psychiatry was even greater: +246% for 10-14 year olds, +163% for 15-19 year olds, +106% for 20-24 year olds” summary The world. In two out of three cases, hospitalizations follow voluntary drug intoxication.

However, hospitalizations for suicide attempts and self-mutilation among thirty-, forty- and fifty-year-olds are decreasing. Even adolescents and young people are not affected by this increase in hospitalizations, the hospitalization rate remains stable, at a much lower level than that of young women. “In 2022, nearly 85,000 people were hospitalized at least once in relation to self-inflicted acts, of which 64% were women » specifies the report.
