California Governor Gavin Newsom announced today that he tested positive for Covid-19 despite doubling in vaccinations and the booster. He will show only mild symptoms and start taking Paxlovid to fight the virus, his office said in a statement.
The news comes as the number of infections across the state has risen rapidly in recent weeks, even as the governor has tried to focus on global climate leadership, gun control, rent relief and water conservation initiatives.
Sacramento, where Newsom lives and works, is already at the top of the state. The California 7-day test positivity rate is 7%. Sacramento District Paste 10.4% Friday. Given that so many residents use home test kits that are not reported in the official data, the real rate is likely to be much higher.
Here’s today’s announcement from Newsom’s office:
This morning the Governor tested positive for COVID-19 after mild symptoms. The Governor will continue to work remotely. In accordance with state and local health guidelines, Governor Newsom will remain in solitary confinement until at least Thursday, June 2, and until it tests negative.
As outlined in California’s SMARTER plan, which focuses on testing and treatment, the governor will conduct testing before leaving isolation. The governor has also received a prescription for Paxlovid, an antiviral that has been shown to be effective against COVID-19, and will immediately begin his 5-day regimen. Governor Newsom was vaccinated and received two booster shots, including one on May 18.
