Challengers is so sexy you forget it doesn’t have sex scenes, Zendaya says
We have no problem taking Zendaya’s word for it when we remember that Luca Guadagnino, director of Challengersalready signed a hot movie with Call me by your name. The film may have been an electroshock of sensuality, her only sex scenes were pretty much limited to a ripe peach.
During the premiere of Challengers in Los Angeles, explained Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor, the trio carrying the film IndieWire what makes sexuality so special in the film:
What’s really special about this movie is that it’s incredibly sexy, but surprisingly there are no sex scenes. People who saw it asked me a lot of questions about the sex scenes and I thought: ‘What sex scenes?’
Tennis, a metaphor for sex (and many other things)
But then, the promotion of Challengers, announcing a sexy movie and revealing photos suggesting a threesome, was he lying? Far from there. In this interview for IndieWireZendaya then explained that we shouldn’t look for the sexual, emotional and passionate charge in sex scenes that will never happen, but in tennis sequences.
Lifting the lid on this intriguing drama, Zendaya revealed:
And yes, it’s true. The sex in question isn’t shown in the film, but Zendaya went on to explain what kind of footage we shot Candies wait for us.
Tennis is sex in the film. I think he metaphorize many things – desires, passion, pain, anger, frustration – I think all the characters use tennis as way of communicating with others when they simply don’t have the words.
