“Every morning I try to bring my curls back to life”: Eva’s 3a textured hair routine

It wasn’t until her senior year of high school that Eva learned to care for her curly hair, a 3a on the Walker scale. Since then, she swears by Les Secrets de Loly, Activilong, Kevin Murphy and Olaplex for her shampoo, conditioner, leave-in and other jellies that define plump, nourished and hydrated curls.

Eva, 25 years old, advertising project manager at to miss she has beautiful type 3a curls on the Walker scale that took some time to know how to maintain and highlight. Since it’s not always easy to take care of your textured hair, find the right actions, tools and products, she tells us about her hair routine full of good advice.

To miss. Have you always been okay with your textured hair? If not, what was your journey to accepting their true nature?

Eve. My hair has been the ordeal of my life for a long time. The worst of my complexes. For years I didn’t know how to tame them or care for them. So my curls had no shape and I dreamed of my girlfriend’s hair. During my childhood/adolescence, brands were not interested in textured hair, there was no communication about it. I just used PDO Curly Hair Shampoo, which just destroyed my hair with its ton of silicone.

When I reached my senior year, I had the opportunity to go to New York, more precisely to Harlem, where I had the opportunity to talk to African-American hairdressers. Then they gave me a lot of advice, names of YouTubers coming directly from the United States who, for their part, try to communicate around good gestures for all of us, the ” curly hair “. From there I was able to treat myself to my very first routine from the Shea Moisture brand that taught me to love my hair, to tame it and then take care of it. This is where my love affair with hair began.

How would you describe the nature of your hair?

My hair is curly! On the Walker scale my hair is between 3A and 3B. In fact, the texture of my hair isn’t quite the same between the top and bottom where my curls are a little more relaxed!

What is your hair routine when you wake up/in the morning?

Every morning I try to bring my curls back to life.

First of all, I moisten my hair (without wetting it completely) using a water mist/spray (paid 2 euros from Action, with a cute design Paw Patrol).

Then I generously apply a defining gel section by section to the curls, to restore their shape and prevent frizz (I use the Boost Curl Jelly from Secrets de Loly or the Defining Jelly from the Activilong brand).

As soon as the jelly is applied evenly, strand by strand, I define my curls myself using the curling method. finger coils (it’s long, very long).

The TikTok above illustrates what the finger coil technique is.

If I don’t have much time, I do the finger coils only on the top of my hair (which happens a lot, because I’m late from the day I stepped foot on earth).

My hair absorbs water and jelly quickly, so there is no need to use heat to dry it.

D+5 after shampooing + doing my routine, quite a bit of frizz but still well defined curls.

What is your possible hair routine before bed?

To avoid damaging my curls too much while I sleep, I have used a satin cap for a long time. But I immediately stopped this method, because at night the hood slipped a lot. Also, when I’m not alone in my bed, I find it really ANTI GLAMOUR.

Since then, I’ve treated myself to a big satin scrunchie. So I make a little palm/pineapple over my head without tightening the elastic too much and have since invested in satin and silk pillowcases.

What’s your shampoo routine when you’re short on time?

When I’m short on time, my shampoo routine doesn’t change in terms of products, but rather in how I apply them. First I start by applying my Secrets de Loly Perfect Match shampoo. I rinse and then apply condition of the same line and I don’t leave it on: I use a brush and untangle the knots while rinsing.

I usually change my shampoo and conditioner every now and then. condition. I have tested many different brands and have recently really fallen in love with Olaplex products and Kevin Murphy products.

I go out, use a microfibre towel or a cotton t-shirt, and wrap my hair in it to eliminate excess water.

Then I quickly apply a leave-in Kurl Nectar des Secrets Loly to all of my hair, from roots to ends. Then I apply the Secrets de Loly Boost Curl Jelly or the Activilong Defining Jelly.

I lightly scrunch my hair to quickly define my curls without doing finger coils and let them air dry.

What is your shampoo routine when you have a lot of time, if it is different from the previous one?

When I have time on my hands (which is usually the case, because my wash day is Sunday), I use pretty much the same routine. I’ll leave mine anyway condition at least 5 minutes before starting to detangle, with your fingers, then rinse.

Then I get out of the shower, wrap my hair in a cotton t-shirt and leave it there for 2 or 3 minutes so I don’t end up with too wet hair.

I conscientiously apply the leave-in strand by strand, then the jelly.

I curl my hair, then add Kevin Murphy’s Smooth Again or La Belle Boucle hair spray to prevent frizz.

When all these products are well distributed evenly, I start mine finger coils thread by thread, below, then above. When the finger coils it’s over, it all depends on what time it is, if I go to bed immediately afterwards I dry my hair with the hairdryer and diffuser, otherwise I let it air dry.

What’s your go-to hairstyle for those days when your hair isn’t cooperating?

I have 3 types of hairstyles for uncooperative hair, in a short time they are:

  • A low bun, slicked back hair, a true hostess

  • A chignon, on the top of the head, with only a strand sticking out in front (inspired by Lena Mahfouf).

What’s your go-to sports hairstyle?

I only play sports in leap years, I really don’t have THE hairstyle to do it with. On the rare times I wear leggings and sneakers, I put a bun on top of my head and wash them when I get home.

What’s your hairstyle for special occasions?

I don’t really have a particular hairstyle for big events. I can straighten them, to give myself a completely different style, or contact the hairdressers of Château Rouge [NDLR : quartier afro avec beaucoup de salons coiffure pour cheveux texturés à Paris] to make two glued braids.

And the ideal would be to make an appointment with my favorite hairdresser (Anissa, from the Hair Studio by Anissa salon) so that she can give me a real quality cut with lots of volume.

What product has revolutionized your routine?

The secrets of Loly Boost Curl. I discovered the true nature of my hair and how it could best be defined.
