Elizabeth Olsen has made it clear that he is done signing on for big studio films unless they are destined for the big screen. In a new interview with InStyle, the actress talked about her passion for the cinematic experience and why she doesn’t want to be a part of projects that skip theaters entirely.
“If a movie is made independently and only sold to a streamer, then that’s fine. But I don’t want to do something where [streaming is] the end of everything.
“I think it’s important for people to come together as a community, to see other human beings, to be together in a space. That’s why I like sports. I think it’s really powerful for people to come together for something they’re excited about. We don’t even do in-person auditions anymore.”
Olsen’s perspective makes sense to someone who grew up on independent cinema. She broke out with Martha Marcy May Marlene in 2011, and even after joining the Marvel juggernaut, she has maintained her roots in smaller, character-focused projects.
From her latest Marvel outing as Wanda Maximoff Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessonly accepted independent films like His three daughters, The evaluationand the upcoming romantic comedy A24 Eternity.
Only His three daughters found a streaming home (Netflix), but still received limited theatrical release, something Olsen sees as crucial to keeping the collective cinematic experience alive.
Of course, Olsen is no stranger to the kind of crowd-pulling magic that theaters can offer. She’s helped fill seats around the world as the Scarlet Witch since her Marvel debut in the post-credits scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Speaking about his time in the MCU, he said:
“Making movies is fun. Silly. It’s ridiculous. We’re people who grew up like kids on a playground. We’re flying. We’re making things that get out of hand. And she’s a character I’ve come back to so many times after more than 10 years. It’s nice to put her down and then I miss her and want her back. I would jump at the chance to be in her shoes again.”
He also praised the enormous collaboration needed to make a Marvel film.
“It’s the coherence of a community and a work, which is hard to find. The crazy camera movement, the stunts and special effects, the visual effects that happen in real time.
“It takes a lot of coordination, there are hundreds and hundreds of people on set, and it’s a powerful thing to be part of all those people working towards one goal. The people who do the visual effects are artists… The soul, the spirit, the heart feels satisfaction doing it. It means something. I care about the acting being great, everyone does.”
Although she hasn’t officially returned to the MCU in person since Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesslent his voice to the Disney+ animated series Marvel Zombies. For now, though, his focus has returned to independent storytelling Eternityhis new A24 film starring Miles Teller AND Callum Turner.
The romantic fantasy is set in an afterlife where the deceased have a week to choose who to spend eternity with. Olsen plays Joan, a woman torn between her first love and the man she built her life with.
Eternity debuts in theaters this Thanksgiving.
