‘He hugged the cactus long enough’: Mel Gibson on how Robert Downey Jr. saved his career

Robert Downey Jr. helped restart the career of his friend Mel Gibson. He lent a helping hand to the actor and director during the “cancellation”.

In 2006, Mel Gibson was arrested for drunk driving. The actor made a number of unacceptable statements while drunk, for which he was harshly criticized in society.

For several years Gibson was essentially blacklisted. But “Iron Man” invited him to his own awards ceremony in 2011, according to Esquire. Downey decided to dedicate his “finest hour” to Mel Gibson, telling how he helped him through difficult times.

“He said taking responsibility for your actions is like hugging a cactus. But if you do it long enough, you can find new meaning in life.<…> “He hugged the cactus long enough,” said Robert Downey Jr., adding that if there were innocent people in the room, then they had chosen the wrong industry for themselves. He then hugged Gibson.

“I was barely in Hollywood at the time, and he stood up and started talking about me,” Mel Gibson recalls. “It was a brave, generous and kind gesture. I love him for that.”

Recently, Robert Downey Jr. announced that he will return to the role of Iron Man. Additionally, the actor’s wife revealed the secret of their 20-year marriage.
