What if we told you that your dog knows what you’re talking about? Researchers from Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary reached this conclusion by conducting an experiment between 18 dogs and their owners. Each brought five items from home that their pets know well.
After the participants said the names of the toys, they showed them and gave them to the dog. They also sometimes made intentional mistakes. To make sure the dogs really knew and remembered the meanings of certain words, the experiment participants first pronounced the name out loud, then showed them an object, and the name did not always coincide with the object. For example, people might say “ball” and point to the leash.
At the same time, scientists state that they cannot say that dogs understand words as well as humans. New research is needed to resolve this.
But a 2021 study by other scientists identified several words recognized by more than 90% of all dogs. This is of course the pet’s name, as well as the most common commands such as “sit”, “come”, “down”, “eat”, “stay”, “no” and “ew”. Owners can also add their own words and phrases. Researchers note that specially trained dogs recognized the most words: The vocabulary of professional dogs trained for the army, police or search and rescue services was 1.5 times larger than that of dogs without professional training.
