After months of speculation, this low-cost cosmetics brand files for bankruptcy

The rumors were circulating but had not yet been confirmed… Now the deal is done.

After many ready-to-wear brands have been put into receivership, it is now the turn of beauty to be hit by this plague. This is The Body Shop, the English cosmetics brand at attractive prices that seems to be in turmoil today. If the brand had already been placed into administration on 13 February in the UK, it is now in France that the latter declares bankruptcy. She was even put on payment suspension by the Paris commercial court.

The Body Shop in worldwide turmoil

Unfortunately, it is not only the French and Anglo-Saxon branches that are affected by this problem. In Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and Austria the situation does not seem to be very favorable for the brand which today suffers from too much competition in its sector of activity.

With beauty being one of the most profitable fields in the world, many brands are emerging and the market is starting to become saturated with proposals. It therefore becomes difficult for brands to succeed, despite attractive offers and increasingly advanced formulas.

What will remain of The Body Shop in France?

The Body Shop represents 66 stores and 260 employees in France alone. So obviously the question arises spontaneously: what will happen in the next few months for the brand? According to LSA Conso: “Martin Rivers would opt for a judicial measure, but for the moment nothing has been decided. […] A first hearing at the Commercial Court of Paris is expected to be held at the beginning of next April.”

According to BFMTV two possibilities will be discussed:

  • That of a judicial recovery, if the court deems that the activity can be maintained.
  • That of a judicial liquidation procedure, which would lead to the immediate dismissal of employees.
