Telfar x Melissa launches bags and shoes that look like chewable sweets

Brazilian plastic shoe and accessory brand Melissa has teamed up with Telfar to create a bag and pair of sandals that look like gummy bears in spicy, chewy shades, available for pre-order from March 11-31, 2024.

“Not for you, for everyone”, this is the slogan of the Telfar house, founded in 2005 by Telfar Clemens. The designer’s mission is to offer gender-neutral fashion that is as inclusive as possible, both in terms of size and price. You probably know her bag nicknamed “Bushwick Birkin”. From its real name, the Shopping Bag is worn by penniless young fashion enthusiasts as well as celebrities accustomed to carrying tens of thousands of euros in the crook of their elbow. Well, this has strongly contributed to the popularization of the brand, winner of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund 2017, the CFDA American Accessories 2019 and the CFDA American Accessories 2020. What also helps it go viral are obviously the bold collaborations, such as with UGG, Converse, or even Eastpak. And this time it is the Melissa brand’s turn to deal with Telfar’s codes.

Available for pre-order from 11th to 31st March (to better manage stocks and thus avoid waste, which is so common in fashion and generates so much pollution), the Telfar x Melissa collaboration called “Telly Jelly” essentially consists of a pair of shoes (sizes from 35 to 42, priced at 110 euros) and a handbag (available in three sizes: small, medium or large, from 150 to 250 euros). Both in plastic material that looks like a soft and colorful jelly candy (in pink, lilac, brown or black).

The flat sandals (sliders, that is) feature the Telfar logo on the top of the foot as a perforated strap. And the famous Shopping Bag also becomes a large, irresistible candy. In addition to its playful, even regressive appearance, this material has the advantage of being durable, waterproof and easy to clean, which makes you want to carry these accessories around the city as well as on messy holidays, as well as at the beach for example.example.

The history of the plastic shoe brand Melissa

And in case you don’t know the Brazilian brand of plastic shoes and accessories, we give you all the information. It owes its name not to the Minikeums hit, but to another unfortunately cult French song: “ Melissa » by Julien Clerc (whose ultra-fetishistic, not to say racist, lyrics exude rape culture), summarizes his site. Brothers Pedro and Alexandre Grendene founded it in 1979, after noticing that the plastic shoes on the market were decidedly ugly and not very durable. They are therefore of the opposite opinion (did you understand?) and offer decidedly fashionable models thanks to Innovative technology for the era of plastic injection molding.

They are rapidly gaining popularity, even outside Brazil, and are taking the opportunity to raise public awareness about plastic waste and its recyclability, to better proclaim the resistance, and therefore sustainability, of their products. Since the 80s they have also signed collaborations with great designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Jason Wu, Karl Lagerfeld, Jean Paul Gaultier, Y/Project and even Marc Jacobs. And now, Telfar!

Pre-order the Telfar x Melissa collaboration from 11 to 31 March 2024 on the Telfar website and on that of Melissa Shoes France.
