“ I tried to practice a sort of photographic writing of realityin which the intersecting existences would retain their opacity and their enigma”writes Annie Ernaux in Newspaper from outside (1993). And his style actually has something photographic about it. The same year in which the immense French author received the Nobel Prize for Literature, the exhibition curator and writer Lou Stoppard spent a month in the collection of the European House of Photography for research into photography and literature. And he took the opportunity to select 150 prints by 29 different photographers to constitute a sort of rewriting Newspaper from outside by Annie Ernaux.

This work published in 1993 transcribes scenes of daily life in the streets, in trains or even in shops, between Cergy-Pontoise and Paris, from 1985 to 1992. And Lou Stoppard enjoyed finding echoes among the MEP’s works, without necessarily try to adhere to it faithfully: hence the photos which actually range from 1940 to 2010, taken in France as well as in England, Japan and even in the United States. The exhibition ” Exteriors – Annie Ernaux & Photography » therefore represents a tribute to the text through images that tell a lot about our societiesboth in their banality and in their social dynamics and inequalities.
