In Greenland, 143 women victims of forced contraception file a complaint against the Danish state

In the 1960s and 1970s, the Danish state imposed forced contraception on Greenlandic women to control the birth rate in this territory.

Some of them were teenagers at the time of the events. On Monday 4 March, 143 women born in Greenland filed a complaint against Denmark, which, when it had the territory under trusteeship, had discreetly organized a campaign of forced contraceptionin the 60s and 70s.

Over 4,500 women were victims

In the late 1960s, Denmark implemented a policy of forced contraception to limit the birth rate in this territory. Over the period, there are more of them 4,500 women who have had an IUD inserted without their consent or that of their family members.

Large numbers of women didn’t even know they were wearing a contraceptive device, and until recently, Greenlandic gynecologists found IUDs in women not even suspect their presence.

So last October 67 women presented a request for compensation of 300 thousand crowns (or 40,200 euros) each. “ Since then, more and more women have come forward. The oldest of them is 85 years old », he explained toFrench media agency their lawyer Mads Pramming. But their request went unheard. They therefore decided to attack the Danish state directly.

Furthermore, a commission of inquiry into Danish policy towards Greenland launched in 2023 is due to publish its findings in 2025.” As far as their cases are concerned, this commission and its outcome are not significant. It will not rule on the violation of their rights, but the courts will decide », added the lawyer.
