But he continued to dine and still enjoys this dinner, just in another direction.

He later got a job at the William Morris Agency in London and soon started a BAFTA party. “I’ve been paying for it for years and years, and one day Chanel called me and they’ve been funding us ever since.”

Finch, however, insists that the Academy and BAFTAs must step up their game. “We have expressed all the political points that need to be made. Let’s select fewer films and go back to the top five. Let’s focus on something classic. “There is a kind of charm in the formality, because if you break the formality of these things, you underestimate the gain.”

This year’s Oscars ceremony, he said, was “an embarrassing mess.”
