You know the concept with sexist undertones of casualty count ? It consists of indicating the number of partners with whom one would have had at least one sexual relationship. Of course, many men congratulate themselves for having a tall figure while stigmatizing women who have the misfortune of having more than fingers on one hand. Let’s insert here the completely ridiculous but much loved metaphor by chauvinists, according to which a key capable of opening multiple locks is great, and a lock opened by multiple keys is terrible.
In short, if our sexual life, be it (hyper)active or inactive, concerns only us and our possible partners, we can nevertheless be curious about the casualty count that we want to declare. In fact, a recent study looked at the issue in France, e.g the result turns out to be full of little genre lies…
44% of men underestimate their number of partners, compared to 22% of women
According to an Ifop study for LELO carried out via self-administered online questionnaire from 29 December 2023 to 2 January 2024 witha sample of 1,911 people, representative of the French population aged 18 and over, we would tend to lie a little. The main result is that 1 in 3 French people underestimate their number of partners. And like the social consequences in terms of reputation (hello shame) are not the same depending on gender, since we still live in a sexist society, the numbers are quite gender specific. It is mostly males who lie to narrow down the list: 40% of men and 22% of women admit to having minimized the number of sexual partners in the past.
Overall, men lie much more than women about their sexuality
Additionally, men lie more than women about many other aspects of sexuality (to no one’s surprise):
- 41% of men and 33% of women admit to having hidden sexual difficulties (such as anorgasmia, vaginismus, pain, premature ejaculation, erection problems or menstrual pain).
- 38% of men and 23% of women admitted to exaggerating their interest in sex.
- 39% of men and 18% of women admit to having increased the frequency of their sexual activities or their previous sexual practices.
- (33% men and 17% women) exaggerated the frequency of their sexual relations with their current partner.
- 33% of men and 16% of women admitted to having embellished their sexual performances with their partner.
- 31% of men and 17% of women admitted to previously pretending to have sex when it hadn’t happened.
- And finally, 29% of men and 14% of women admitted to having overestimated the number of sexual partners they had had at some point in their lives. Whether it’s increasing them or decreasing them casualty countmen lie much more than women.
If the latter have the reputation of simulating in bed (often to please their partner, moreover), it is out of bed that men prefer to simulate and lie…
