At the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, women are at the center of attention

For its 46th edition, the world’s largest international short film festival has decided to highlight several European female directors.

Eleven women on the jury, 24 directors classified in the spotlight… The Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival is no joke. The 46th edition of the largest event of its kind in the world opens this Friday 2 February. Until the 10th it will propose more than 500 screenings, with the aim of enhancing women.

First of all because unlike previous years, but one continent, Europe, and the 24 European directors put in the spotlight. Then, thanks to a retrospective entitled Insoumises – Portraits of rebellious womenwhich brings together films from 12 countries, from 1971 to 2021.” Women will be present everywhere: in films, at the center of debates, professional meetings or conferences offered to the public, and finally on stage “, the organizers confided to theFrench media agency.

An award for “best queer film”

More generally, the competition, divided into three – national, international and Lab – will propose 133 short films, chosen from 9,400 films entered. Eleven women members of the jury, directors, journalists and screenwriters, will have the task of choosing the winners.


Furthermore, for the third year, the “Best Queer Film” award will be awarded to a film from one of the three competitions that, beyond LGBTQI+ themes, “will present an opening onto a world resistant to norms”, the organizers said at Agence France-Press.

However, for the first time in its history, the festival was forced to reduce the number of competing programs due to a lack of resources. Thus the national selection will go from 12 to 10 programmes, the international one from 14 to 12. The price of tickets also had to be increased slightly.
