For Denis Villeneuve (Dune), the lack of creativity and finance are killing cinema today

On the eve of the release of the highly anticipated Dune 2, the director of Blade Runner 2024, First Contact and Dune confided that the film industry was going through a crisis. And for good reason: in his opinion, the creativity of filmmakers has given way to an obsession with economic considerations.

It is one of the most anticipated films of the year. On February 28, Denis Villeneuve will reveal it Dune 2, starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. While promoting the film, the Canadian director took the opportunity to share his concerns about the current state of the film industry.

“Freedom and risk” to save cinema

Do you feel like you haven’t seen a good movie at the cinema in the last few months, or even in the last few years? Also Denis Villeneuve. In an interview for the Time published on January 31, the Canadian filmmaker unveiled his inventory of the contemporary industry, and the finding is not very rosy. According to the director, several factors devour the creativity of directors. Villeneuve analyzed it as follows:

” We live a very conservative era, where creativity is limited. It’s all Wall Street’s fault. What will save cinema is freedom and risk taking. And you get the sense that audiences get excited when they see something they’ve never seen before.

Artificial intelligence: a false enemy

Many observers accuse artificial intelligence of being behind the explosion in film quality. Denis Villeneuve expressed his opinion on the subject, explaining that in his opinion the real problem is not artificial intelligence, but artificial intelligence “makes filmmakers sometimes behave like algorithms”acting according to the logic of conformism, copying or even profitability instead of giving free rein imagination, creativity, audacitywhich are all the ingredients of good movies.

These observations echo those of director Richard Linklater. As reported by Hollywood reporterthe latter declared it last September films should not be described as “Contents”with the risk of losing what constitutes the essence of cinema.

To break this confusion between film and content, the latter has found its own method. He trusts original and bold devices, that only cinema allows: the filmmaker revealed that he started shooting for 20 years with Paul Mescal. Like what, the death of cinema is not imminent.
