Yourself – short film available from 2 February 2024
Pixar’s stop-motion animated short tells the story “the story of a wooden doll’s journey of self-discovery as she struggles to fit in and blend in with the crowd of her peers”. Ethiopian director Searit Huluf is at the helm of this story loosely inspired by Pinocchio.
Black Cake – series available from 7 February 2024
Black cake is an eight-episode series adapted from the novel by Charmaine Wilkerson. In this family drama that doubles as a crime case, with diverse characters and a global intrigue that spans decades, from Jamaica to Italy, Scotland, England and Southern California.
In the late 1960s, a young woman, Covey, disappears into the sea off the coast of Jamaica. She is feared to have drowned after fleeing following her husband’s murder. In present-day California, a widow, Eleanor Bennett, loses her battle with cancer. She leaves her two sons, Byron and Benny, with whom she was on bad terms, a USB stick containing the unpublished story of her emigration to the United States. This recording will challenge everything they thought they knew about their family’s origins…
Suncoast – film available from February 9, 2024
Based on a semi-autobiographical story, Coast of the Sun tells the story of Doris (Nico Parker, seen in The last of us), a teenager whose brother has just been placed in a specialized facility by her determined mother Kristin (Laura Linney). There, Doris forms an unlikely friendship with Paul (Woody Harrelson), an eccentric activist…
Written and directed by Laura Chinn (to whom we owe the series Florida girls), the film premiered at Sundancereference festival for American independent cinema.
Shōgun by FX – series available from February 27, 2024
It’s time for action, with this miniseries adapted from bestseller of the same name by James Clavell. In 1600 Japan, at the dawn of a civil war, Shōgun has as its protagonist John Blackthorn, the English commander of an abandoned ship on the beach of a fishing village. The secrets it contains could help Lord Yoshii Toranaga win over his enemies in the Council of Regents. The fates of Toranaga and Blackthorne are linked to that of their translator, Toda Mariko, mysterious Christian of noble origins, the last of her lineage to fall from grace.
