An American study, published Wednesday 24 January on Journal of American Medicine and transmitted by our sisters from Huffpost USAreports 64,565 rape-related pregnancies in the 14 states that have banned abortion since the repeal of the Roe v. Wading in June 2022. Terrible evidence that, even in states that provide an exception for rape, access to abortion is not guaranteed for anyone.
Only 10 legal abortions recorded
“In this cross-sectional study, thousands of girls and women living in states that ban abortion had rape-related pregnancies, but few (if any) legally obtained an abortion in the state, suggesting that rape exceptions do not provide reasonable access to abortion for victims.details the study, broadcast by HuffPost.
In fact, of the 14 states that ban abortion, four theoretically provide exceptions in cases of rape: Idaho, North Dakota, Indiana and West Virginia. Exemptions which therefore prove to be ineffective.
Based on multiple government sources, the study estimates that 520,000 American women have been raped through vaginal penetration since July 1, 2022, and that 12.5% of them have become pregnant. However, only 10 legal abortions were recorded in the 14 states affected by a partial or total abortion ban. The study is relentless: “People who have been raped and become pregnant cannot access legal abortion in their home state, even in states that have exceptions for rape.”
The ignorance of legislators has a lot to do with this
As noted by HuffPost, anti-abortion lawmakers have historically demonstrated their widespread ignorance (not to mention stupidity) regarding the significant risk of unwanted pregnancies after rape.
For example, in 2012, former member of the House of Representatives Todd Akin made headlines by declaring that “If it really is rape, the woman’s body has the means to try to stop everything.” A statement without any scientific basis.
Four years later, former Idaho Republican Rep. Pete Nielsen added another layer: “From what I understand, in many rape cases there is no pregnancy due to the trauma caused by the incident.”.
Many approximations that contribute to continually putting women’s health at risk.
