Cinema attendance in Indonesia to increase by 14.5% in 2023;  Domestic films return in the fourth quarter and take 48% market share

According to local box office analyst Bicara Box Office, cinema attendance in Indonesia rose 14.5% year-on-year to 114.5 million in 2023, up from 100 million the year before. This places the market approximately 24% below the pre-pandemic figure of 152 million visitors in 2019.

Despite a slow start to the year, local productions picked up speed from September and ended 2023 with 53.3 million admissions, representing a 48% market share, according to Bicara Box Office data.

In 2022, Indonesian films generated 57 million admissions and a market share of 56.5%, a year with fewer Hollywood releases in which MD Pictures’ film also enjoyed record success. KKN Di Desa Penariwhich attracted 9.23 million admissions, becoming Indonesia’s biggest domestic film of all time (the film was also released in an extended version in late 2022 and the two versions together attracted more than 10 million admissions).

MD Pictures also produced Indonesia’s top film in 2023: the horror film by Kimo Stamboel Sewu Dino, which attracted 4.89 million visitors. In the same sense as KKN Di Desa PenariThe film is based on a Twitter thread that went viral in Indonesia.

According to Bicara Box Office, Sewu Dino had the highest attendance of the year overall, tied with Universal Quickly second with 4.81 million. However, Universal’s data is linked even though they didn’t rank the film Quickly Visitor numbers slightly higher at 5.1 million.

Indonesia does not provide standard box office data, as local cinema chains do not report their numbers. Bicara Box Office uses its own tracking and statistical analysis to extrapolate from the available data.

Two films released on the last weekend of 2023 – Visinema’s action drama 13 bombs and MD images’ Layangan Putus: The Movie – also has the chance to reach one million visitors in January 2024.

Other Indonesian films to make the year-end top ten include MVP Pictures’ horror thriller The edge of death with 3.3 million visitors and religious dramas Air Mata Di Ujung Sajadah (3.13 million) and 172 days (2.87 million). Riri Rizas Petualanga Sherina 2A sequel to a popular 2000 musical adventure, it was number 11 with 2.41 million admissions.

Two more action-oriented local dramas: Wregas Bhanutejas Androgy and Yandy Laurens’ Fall in love like in the movies – were solid mid-range hits with 500,000 and 600,000 admissions respectively, suggesting that the market has potential to diversify away from its current reliance on horror films.
