The Asia-Europe Festival of Young Cinema in Macau presents the program of screenings, master classes and works

The event consists of two main parts: a program of master classes and screenings aimed at young directors, film students and local audiences, and a Works-in-Progress (WiP) Lab, which will include international sales representatives, distributors and festival programmers.

The masterclasses will be led by leading international filmmakers, including some from Chinese-speaking countries – Ning Hao, Li Dongmei, Johnnie To, Yon Fan and Lee Hong-chi – along with Japanese filmmakers Ryosuke Hamaguchi and Shinya Tsukamoto, Russian Aleksey German Jr. The Italian Gabriel Menetti, the Indian Anurag Kashyap, Lav Diaz from the Philippines and the Iranian filmmaker Amir Naderi.

The China Film Directors Association is actively participating in the event and will bring a group of young Chinese directors from the Green Onion Emerging Talent Project.

Marco Mueller, artistic director of the event, explained that it aims to bridge the gap between young Chinese filmmakers and audiences and the international market.

“I’ve always felt that Macau for my work – connecting filmmakers from Chinese-speaking areas with international filmmakers, festivals and commercial agents – is the only place that can really be considered a transition where it all happens,” explains Mueller. The screening program is linked to the master classes and includes both current films and restored classics. The screenings will take place at the Emperor Group’s new cinema at Lisboeta Mall in Macau’s Cotai district.

Among the recent festival films screened at the event is Li Dongmei’s film mommya, Lee Hong-chi’s Love is a weaponWang Bing’s youthYon fans Kersenlaan 7Kashyaps kennedyby Diaz Essential truths of the lake and German Heaven.

One of the classics is Yon Fans Bugis Street (1995), Wang Bing Tiexi District: West of the tracks (2003) and that of Abbas Kiarostami The experience (1973), co-authored by Naderi, who also presents his earlier films Wait, harmonica And The runner.

Several of Hamaguchi’s films will be shown, among others dedicationn (2008), Happy Keepingr (2015), Asako I & II (2018), Wheel of happiness and fantasy (2021), drive my car (2021) and Evil does not exist (2023). Screenings of Tsukamoto’s films include: Fire on the plain (2014), Killing (2018) and Spruce colore (2023).

The event’s WiP Lab selected 11 projects from filmmakers in mainland China and four Chinese-language international projects (The full list can be found below), which is awarded to festival programmers and sales staff. Festivals that have confirmed their participation include Rotterdam, Berlin, Cannes, Tokyo and Busan, while distribution partners include Loco Films, Edko Films, Fortissimo, Rediance and Parallax.

WiP Lab’s selection will be screened in Zhuhai, the city just on Macau’s Chinese border, from January 8 to 10, so that the unfinished films can be screened in full without applying for export permits.

A jury of five film professionals presents awards for post-production services to the winning films. The jury includes producers Jeremy Chua and Wang Yang, screenwriter Wang Yixin, production and sales manager Esther Yeung and Mumbai Film Festival artistic director Deepti Dcunha.

Describing this year’s edition as a soft launch, Mueller wants to gauge audience response before possibly expanding the event: “Although I’ve been coming to Macau regularly over the past few years, including during the pandemic, it’s a place that’s to change.” So we are in the process of learning how to work with the new Macau and what kind of audience will attend,” Mueller said.

“Based on the interest we’ve had on social media, we believe it will be a mix of local audiences and young, educated viewers from the mainland.”

The event is organized by the organizing committee of the Festival of Young Cinema (Asia-Europe) and the China Film Director Association and its Green Onion Project, with Macao Zhengda Culture Communication Co and Xiamen Short Film Week as strategic partners.
