If you were a teenager or adult between the early 2000s and 2015, you probably have mixed memories of matte makeup. In this (long) period, the latter was in everyone’s face before being dethroned by its extreme opposite: bright makeup. And since trends are cyclical and the 2010s are back in fashion, THE Matte makeup also returns. As Val Garland, global artistic director of makeup at L’Oréal Paris, testifies Vogue USA : “It’s about time matte makeup came back, with that dreamy blurry skin, because it looks good on everyone.”
Unlike bright makeup, which tends to mark pores and bring out a shiny side that not everyone likes, matte makeup seems to suit all skin types. And this is a great advantage…
Matte makeup: a style suitable for all skin types
Oily skin types will definitely be the happiest with this return to matte makeup. And for good reason, the latter tends to limit the shiny areas, especially on the famous T-zone.
Even people with acne-prone skin who want to camouflage their imperfections will be delighted by the return of matte makeup as envisioned by Val Garland: “If you have acne or any other skin problem and like to highlight your glow, you will also highlight your imperfections, while matte makeup can help camouflage them.”
As for dry skin, don’t worry, Today there are products with a matte finish that do not dry out the skin.. Furthermore, they do not leave signs of dehydration wrinkles, particularly around the eyes, an area particularly affected by this phenomenon.
Matte makeup has changed a lot in just a few years
Trends return, but their return always marks a small change that allows them to dissociate themselves from their predecessors. This is the case of matte make-up which, instead of being applied all over the face, rather they will be deposited in small dabs on specific areas. The target ? Get a minimalist, soft and cloudy finish, far from the heavy and dusty result of the early 21st century. Xabier Rodrigues Lucena, national artist at the MAC, explains to Vogue Us what result to expect from this new trend. According to him, the goal would be to get a face “matte in the center and radiant on the sides. In short, a trick that works every day.”
