Speaking amid his ongoing legal battle with bandmate Daryl Hall, John Oates says he has the experience behind him.
Hall sued Oates last month over Oates’ plan to sell his interest in their joint venture, Whole Oats Enterprises, to Primary Wave Music without the other’s consent. Hall obtained a restraining order against Oates while the trial was ongoing.
“You can’t ignore the fact that Hall & Oates’ hit catalog and 50-year career will always trump almost anything Daryl does on his own or anything I do on my own, and that’s fine because I’m very proud on it. ” By. “This music,” Oates recently told David Yontef Behind the velvet rope Podcast. “I’m really proud of what Daryl and I have created together. I think we’ve made music that will stand the test of time.”
He continued: ‘I don’t like to live in the past. I liken it to what it’s like when you go to a big museum and you’re really looking forward to seeing all the beautiful paintings or exhibits or whatever, and then towards the end your feet start to hurt and you say, ‘ You know what? I can’t wait to get out of here.’ That’s how I think about it.”
Hall and Oates formed the duo Philadelphia in 1970. During their 1974 to 1991 heyday as Hall & Oates, the pair reached the US Top 40 with 29 of their 33 singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
“There was no time to think. There were a lot of business demands, a lot of tough demands…Daryl and I were at the top of the pop world. We had one number one record after another. We traveled the world constantly. Everyone thinks it was probably the highlight of my life, but to be honest it wasn’t my favorite time.”
He added: “I’ve moved on. It’s just about living in my presence.”
Six of the duo’s singles reached No. 1: “Rich Girl” (1977), “Kiss on My List” (1980), the two 1981 releases “Private Eyes” and “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do) ” ” , Maneater (1982) and Out of Touch (1984). Seven of her albums have been certified platinum by the RIAA and six others have been certified gold.
