The Joaquin Phoenix film, produced by Apple Original Films and distributed by Sony Pictures, originally debuted on Thanksgiving and exceeded expectations at the time, earning $78.8 million worldwide.

The Great Britain is the top market at $16.7 million, followed by France ($14.4 million), Germany ($10.9 million), Spain ($10.1 million) and Italy ($8.4 million). The top 10 is rounded off Mexico ($7.5 million), Australia ($7.3 million), The Netherlands ($5.5 million), China ($3.9 million) and Brazil ($3.9 million).
Vanessa Kirby and Tahar Rahim also star in the story of the titular military leader’s origins and his swift, brutal rise to emperor, seen through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine.
Sony spread the message worldwide with a world premiere in Paris and then premieres in the UK and Madrid (the latter at the Prado Museum, which was a first). It helped that the stars were on the red carpet, and even some harsh reviews didn’t stop people, including adult audiences, from seeing the film.

As Anthony reported when the film was released, Sony’s distribution deal is expected to account for about 8% of the box office, with Apple cutting marketing costs. Sony recovers its marketing costs before the money goes to Apple. If the box office can’t cover marketing costs, Apple will pick up the slack. However, this is not to be expected as ticket sales abroad are solid.
Earlier this month, Sony inked global distribution deals for two major upcoming films from Apple Original Films: the George Clooney and Brad Pitt feature Wolves and the title Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum Project Artemis.
