The Palestinian president said Gaza was unrecognizable due to the damage suffered by the Israeli offensive and blamed the US for prolonging the war.

The attack has killed at least 241 people in the past 24 hours as the war enters its third month.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called the Gaza conflict “more than just a war of extermination,” adding that it was unprecedented in the history of the Palestinian people.

Israeli army chief Herzi Halevi said the war would continue for “many more months” so that Israel’s “successes are preserved for a long time”.

On an Egyptian television channel, Abbas said in his first interview since the war began that the West Bank could collapse at any time.

More than 20,900 Palestinians, two-thirds of them women and children, have died since the war began, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, which does not distinguish between civilians and fighters in the deaths.

About 1,200 people died after Hamas invaded southern Israel on October 7 and took about 240 people hostage. Israel says it wants to release more than 100 hostages still being held in Gaza.

“There are no magic solutions,” he added.

Israeli and Arab media say Egypt has proposed a ceasefire plan.

This would reportedly lead to the gradual release of all Israeli hostages and an unspecified number of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons, culminating in the end of the Israeli offensive.

Under an earlier temporary ceasefire deal brokered by Qatar, dozens of hostages were released from Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

But so far both sides have resisted calls for a permanent ceasefire.
