In an interview for The Parisiannoticed by our colleagues at SHEthe president of the National Council of the Medical Association, François Arnault, shared the desire to make the fight against domestic violence a priority for 2024. “My ambition is to do everything to better identify this violence and support those who suffer it” he said, promising better workforce training and a bill to make it easier for doctors to report.
A bill to protect doctors who report
“Less than 5% of reports regarding minors in danger come from doctors, of which 2% from general practitioners”. How to explain such a low figure? For the president of the Medical Association, the fear of exposing himself to potential legal proceedings has a lot to do with it. “The father of the abused child, the husband of the victim can file a defamation complaint before the court […]. Even if the doctor emerges victorious after a few years, the impact on his life is immense.”.
To remove this obstacle and better protect victims and workers who report, François Arnault intends to review the law. “We cannot admit that violence exists and that the Order does not denounce it” he insisted on the Parisian.
