Figures that send shivers down your spine. In 2021, only 5% of women who reported being victims of sexual violence filed a complaint, according to an INSEE study for the Ministry of the Interior, published Thursday 14 December.
58,000 women report being victims of rape in 2021
The study, entitled “With experience and sensitivity in terms of safety”was carried out on a representative sample of the population with the aim, as reported by Franceinfo, of “to better understand the French people’s feeling of concern in terms of insecurity”. They were asked if they had been victims of “an act of delinquency (crime, damage to property, etc.) or violence, including sexual violence” in 2021.
Of those surveyed, 247,000 reported having experienced sexual violence. 88% of the people affected are women, in 60% of cases they are under 25 years old. In total, 58,000 women report having been victims of rape in 2021 and half of them know their attacker. However, only 5% of sexual assault victims filed a complaint.
Fear of not being taken seriously
As told Franceinfo, the study identifies several important barriers to explain this low complaint rate. 25% of victims believe that the facts are not serious enough, 24% think that a complaint will lead to nothing and 16% have not filed a complaint for fear of not being believed by the police.
