According to a survey, 86% of French women believe that their life as a woman is difficult

According to a barometer of French women’s morale created by OpinionWay for “Elle Active”, 35% of them believe that their life would have been easier if they had been a man.

Wage disparities, gender inequalities, sexist and sexual violence… Being a woman is a heavy daily task and French women know this well. According to the female morale barometer, created by OpinionWay for Elle Active, 86% of French women believe that life as a woman is difficult today. Or eight out of ten French women.

In 2023, women’s morale is “mixed”

More globally, 35% of French women believe their life would have been easier if they had been a man.

Therefore, the survey reveals that in 2023, the overall morale of women is “ mixed », as 28% of them gave a score lower than 6 out of 10 regarding their morale. 41% of respondents gave a score between 6 and 7 and only 29% gave a score between 8 and 10.

Morale (low) was related to age. Women aged 50 and over consider the age when they were happiest “he is more likely to be between 31 and 36 years old”while those aged between 18 and 24 believe they were most fulfilled at 16. On average, women report being happiest at age 29.

But quarantine seems difficult, as the barometer shows. For women aged 50 and over, the average age at which they felt most unhappy was between 40 and 44.

More than half of the women interviewed, i.e. 51%, do not have confidence in the future and gave our score between 0 and 5 out of 10. Furthermore, 42% of French women consider their stress level to be bad and 39% of they are worried about their mental health. A figure that rises to 54% for those under 35.

A third of women do not feel legitimate in their position

Part of the study also gives space to the relationship between women and motherhood. For 91% of the women interviewed, being a mother entails heavy responsibilities. However, 83% believe that being a mother has had a positive impact on their morale, implying a significant impact on mental and domestic workload for 76%.

In the professional field, women’s lack of confidence has good reasonsa third of those interviewed do not feel legitimate in their position.

For the future, women expect reforms that protect them better: 55% of them ask for new laws in the field of health, 42% in that of security, and 38% in the fight against sexist and sexual violence.
