Elon Musk revisited the story of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones in response to a survey he started on his X platform.
Jones and his Infowars site have been banned since 2018. The reinstatement of Jones’ account comes as Musk has seen ads from major brands disappear from the platform.
Jones has repeatedly said on his web show that the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, never happened and was staged to tighten gun laws.
Relatives of many of the victims sued Jones in Connecticut and Texas and won more than a billion in judgments against him, a ruling Jones is appealing. A Texas judge ruled in October that Jones cannot use bankruptcy protection to avoid paying more than $1.1 billion to families who have filed suit.
Musk’s poll on Saturday asked whether Jones should return to power. The results showed that 70% of the respondents responded positively. Musk tweeted earlier today: “The people have spoken and so it shall be.”
A few hours later, Jones’ messages were visible again.
Musk said the move was about protecting freedom of expression. He promised that X’s fact-checking crowdsourcing service would “respond quickly to any post from AJ that requires correction.”
