Taylor Swift named Time’s Person of the Year, and it’s a turning point for “female art”

This year Time has not named a political figure, but an artist, personality of the year. At 33, Taylor Swift became the recipient of the prestigious title, highlighting the importance and legitimacy of pop culture in the world.

2023 was his year, the Time confirmed it. Like every year since 1927, the prestigious American magazine has put several personalities in the running to reward just one of them with the coveted title of Personality of the Year. On Wednesday, December 6, the news arrived: Taylor Swift, who influences millions of people every day, was chosen by the magazine.

Disproportionate figures for “non-measurable” results.

This year we kept hearing exploit by Taylor Swift, all of which leave an impression of excess. Her concert film, The Turn of the Ages it crushed all the competition at the box office, achieving excellent results $96 million in revenue in just one weekend operational and today reaching the $250 millionless than a month after its release.

Before bringing her popularity to the cinema, Taylor Swift would have done it too he increased America’s GDP with his tour. John Williams, the Fed chairman, even mentioned a “Taylor Swift Effect” on the economy. Presidents around the world have even asked the singer to include their country in her tour Chile, Budapest, Canada and Thailand.

For Sam Jacobs, editor-in-chief of TimeTaylor Swift may have an impressive set of scores, but she achievements this year cannot be summed up in numbers because they are immense. As reported BFMHe explains :

«Much of what (Taylor) Swift has accomplished in 2023 is immeasurable (…) She is committed to valuing the dreams, feelings and experiences of people, especially women, who feel overlooked and regularly undervalued»

Towards ” more feminine art

This reason motivated the magazine’s editorial team to make Taylor Swift “the first person in the arts to be named person of the year for his achievement as an artist”. And for good reason: Taylor Swift’s entry into the list of historic winners is above all pop culture’s entry into a list passionate about politics. This is how the 33-year-old artist succeeds Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, Martin Luther King, Pope francesco, Greta Thunberg AND Volodymyr Zelenskywinner in 2022.

If politics seems to be thread of the title, Taylor Swift represents the recognition of Time towards a culture sometimes accused of being so superficial due to its size female AND popular. As Taylor Swift explained in the magazine’s columns:

“Women have been told what we naturally gravitate towards […] it’s more superficial than what stereotypical men gravitate towards. […] And what has existed since the dawn of time? A patriarchal society. And what sustains a patriarchal society? Money, income, economy. So if we look at all this in the most cynical way, the fact that If women’s ideas become more profitable, that means more women’s art will be created. It’s extremely comforting. »
