Jordanian filmmaker Amjad Al Rasheed on how he hopes ‘Inshallah A Boy’ will spark a conversation about women’s legal rights – Red Sea Studio

“Amjad” marks Al Rasheed’s feature film debut since its premiere at Cannes Critics Week this year Insha Allah, a boy is constantly at festivals and was also chosen as Jordan’s official entry for the Oscars. The film celebrates its Arab world premiere here in competition at the Red Sea International Film Festival.

The film, starring Mouna Hawa, tells the story of a Jordanian housewife who risks losing her house and daughter after the death of her husband, as local laws and customs deny women the right to inherit. Her only hope is the birth of a son who has the right to inherit her house.

Al Rasheed, who co-wrote the script with Rula Nasser and Delphine Agut, says the story was inspired by a close family member who was in a similar situation, and although that woman was eventually allowed to stay in her home, he wondered what would have happened if her in-laws had refused: “What if she had said no to all those laws and traditions at the time?” Can a woman say no in this society?

“I hope that this film will spark a conversation. In fact, my main goal was to make people reevaluate what was normalized. to ask whether these laws and traditions still fit into our modern societies or whether they represent an obstacle to our further development,” says Al Rasheed.

“I really believe that cinema only really takes off when people leave the cinema and start talking about the film.”

Al Rasheed also spoke about how important it was for him to co-write the script with two women; Working with Hawa, a Palestinian actress whose credits include A Gaza weekend And Fauda; Antone Saliba’s new agency Untamed Talent, which now represents him; and his next project, which he will finally have time for once his festival tours are over.
