Disney CEO Bob Iger blames the pandemic effect as one of the reasons for the dismal box office results The wonders.
At a New York Times business conference earlier this week, Iger said the studio needed a bit of a revival.
″The wonders was shot during Covid,” he explained. “There wasn’t as much supervision on set where we have executives, so to speak [that are] I really look at what is being done day by day.
He cited a number of reasons why the studio’s current slate of films is lagging, including streaming and messaging.
“The experience of access [the films] and watching it at home is better than ever,” he said. “And [it’s] a bargain when you think about it. You can stream Disney+ for $7 a month. It is much cheaper than going to the cinema with the whole family. So I think the bar has now been raised when it comes to the quality of what people get out of their homes and in the cinema.”
Iger also acknowledged that messages in recent films have turned off a certain segment of audiences.
“Entertainment first, not message,” Iger said, adding that “positive messages for the world” sometimes overwhelmed the storytelling.
“And I’m not sure any other studio will ever reach the same numbers as us,” he said, citing past successes. “I mean, we got to the point where we were disappointed if a movie didn’t make a billion dollars at the global box office,” he said. “It’s an incredibly high standard and I think we need to be more realistic.”
Disney plans to release it next year Deadpool 3, From the inside out 2And Mufasa: The Lion King.
