Kamala Harris criticizes Kevin McCarthy over his comments about Joe Biden’s age, but refuses to comment on TikTok and X/Twitter

As afternoon guest The New York TimesAt the DealBook Summit, Vice President Kamala Harris criticized former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s claim that President Joe Biden was not really involved in the negotiations because of his age.

Earlier on Wednesday, McCarthy suggested that Biden was not the person he was talking to and that he was reading cards during negotiations during the debt ceiling crisis.

Of McCarthy, Harris said, “With all due respect, if anyone has had the experience he’s had recently, I don’t think he’s a judge in negotiations.”

She added: “Age is more than a chronological fact. I’ve spent a lot of time with our president, whether it’s in the Oval Office, the Situation Room, and other places, and I can tell you … he commands not only in rooms around the world, but also in the Oval Office – meeting with members of Congress, meeting with industry leaders, meeting with community leaders.”

McCarthy was removed as speaker of the House of Representatives in October.

Harris also addressed Biden’s dismal poll results, despite a period of record low unemployment and falling inflation.

“These are also macroeconomic measures and do not necessarily reflect the hearts, experiences and feelings of the American people,” she said. “Prices are still too high for many Americans, and we still have work to do to fix the problem.” She pointed to efforts to contain insulin costs, reduce student loan debt and allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices, but “our challenge is just letting people know who it is for them.”

Speaking about Russia’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 election, Harris said, “We have to take very seriously the fact that not only individuals, but nation states are taking very significant actions to undermine the democracy of the United States of America . Asked by host Andrew Ross Sorkin if she had a specific opinion on TikTok amid fears that China is trying to exert its influence through the social media platform, she said she didn’t have a specific opinion. She also said she’s not on TikTok, but “a lot of people in my family are, I can tell you that.”

Harris also did not comment on X/Twitter owner Elon Musk and his amplification of an anti-Semitic post. “I have no say in that,” she said.
