A wedding massacre in Thailand left five people dead after a “drunk” Paralympic athlete groom shot his newlywed bride, mother-in-law and guests before killing himself.

The shooting took place at around 11.25pm ​​on Saturday at a house in the Wang Nam Khieo district in northeastern Thailand where a wedding reception was taking place for Chaturong Suksuk (29) and Kanchana Pachunthuek (44).

During the celebrations, guests and family members spotted Chaturong, a former soldier, looking angry after an argument with his bride “over insecurities about his disability.”

He then stormed out of the venue to his car and returned with a 9mm pistol before opening fire, killing the bride, her 62-year-old mother Kingthong Klajorho and her 38-year-old sister Kornika Manator.

Stray bullets hit two other guests, killing one of them, 50-year-old Thong Nonkhunthod, and seriously wounding 28-year-old Bamrung Chaterarat.

Chaturong – a Paralympic athlete who won silver in swimming at the ASEAN Para Games in Indonesia last year – then put the gun in his mouth and shot himself.

When rescuers arrived, the bodies were strewn across the dance floor.

Police said 11 bullets were found at the scene, while video footage showed several body bags in the grass and pools of blood at the scene.

Although an exact motive has not yet been established, witnesses told local media that the argument was sparked by Chaturong’s insecurities about his disability.

Gaste reportedly said Chaturong – who was “quite drunk” at the time – became angry because he was afraid his new wife would leave him for other men.

A 70-year-old neighbor said: “I heard the loud shots and thought they were just setting off fireworks for the party.”

“It wasn’t until the morning that I heard what happened.” I am devastated. “I have known the couple for a long time and was like a mother to them.”

Chaturong is believed to have legally purchased the weapon and ammunition last year.

Police said Chaturong was a former marine who worked at the Sattahip Naval Base in Chon Buri. He lost his right leg after being hit by a train while on duty.

According to Thai media, the couple lived together for three years before deciding to get married.

The tragedy came just days after Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin signed an order to suspend the issuance of gun permits for a year to curb gun violence in the country.

The official vowed to tighten gun control in Thailand, which has one of the highest gun ownership and homicide rates in Asia, after a shocking gunman opened fire on shoppers in a Bangkok mall in October.
