The Taiwan Golden Horse Awards is considered the most prestigious award ceremony for Chinese-language film from across East Asia. However, the ceremony has been boycotted by mainland China since 2018, when the Best Documentary Film winner referred to Taiwan’s independence in her acceptance speech (Beijing considers Taiwan a breakaway province from China rather than a separate country).

Since then, very few films from mainland China have entered the awards, while Hong Kong filmmakers have faced similar pressure and only entered the competitions if they did not seek any form of distribution in China.

This year’s nominees included films shot in China or with a connection to the mainland, but which do not claim Chinese nationality. Winner of Best Narrative Film Stone walls was filmed in China but is considered a Japanese production.

This year’s ceremony passed without controversy, although young filmmaker Ho Sze-wai mentioned freedom of expression when accepting the award for best live-action short film Before emptying the box, on the Hong Kong diaspora: “I hope that people from Hong Kong can be braver in telling their own stories. We need to capture how people in Hong Kong really live.”
