How were concubines punished in the Sultan’s harem?

Many people still associate the word “Harem” with the TV series “Magnificent Century” and imagine women living without being deprived of anything. But in reality everything was exactly the opposite. For example, before Suleiman ascended the throne, there was real chaos in the harems. And all girls who were guilty for any reason were sentenced to cruel torture. We tell how the concubines were punished in the sultan’s harem.

Of course, often women were expelled from the harem even for minor crimes. After that, as a rule, no one could marry them. They could have been kicked out for absolutely any reason: from illness to inappropriate behavior. But as it turns out, that’s not the worst thing that could happen.

Most importantly, the concubines were afraid of torture. And, as you know, in the sultan’s palace the guards’ fantasies were not limited. For example, they could throw the girls into a dungeon and leave them to be torn apart by the rats that lived there. Or worse, they put the concubine in a bag full of poisonous snakes, tie stones to her feet and throw her into the sea. But such consequences were resorted to only in the most extreme cases, if one of the girls was found guilty of serious transgressions – for example, if she killed another concubine or even made an attempt on the life of the sultan or his mother. This happened too.
