Tyler Perry weighs in on the SAG-AFTRA strike, now in its 117th day, as it appears a possible settlement is getting a lot closer.
In an interview on CBS morning, Perry noted that he closed his Tyler Perry Studios in support of the guild and held fundraisers and food drives on site, but added that it was “stressful” not to work for so long.
Perry praised SAG-AFTRA chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland and SAG-AFTRA chairman Fran Drescher, “but it’s very important to know when we’ve won.” This is only a three-year contract. “We will renegotiate in two, two and a half years,” Perry said. “So we need to know what we won and what we won now? That’s it. Currently. … If I ran my business to get everything at once, I wouldn’t be here. I’ve got as much as I can get right now, so let’s see what we can do next.
As we previously reported, negotiators from SAG-AFTRA and the studios will meet later today to potentially finalize the final phase of finalizing a new deal, following a breakthrough last night on the contentious issue of AI. “We are very close,” a guild source told Deadline. “Not done yet, but very close with strong protection language,” added the source of AI rails the guild had long sought, even before it went on strike in mid-July.
The bitter and expensive strike crippled Hollywood, cost the California economy $67.5 billion and led to the loss of 45,000 entertainment jobs.
