PMA for all: Sarah El Hairy, Secretary of State for Biodiversity, announces her pregnancy

It’s not just a pink notebook, it’s also a step forward on the activist’s part. Sarah El Hairy, Secretary of State for Biodiversity and co-president of MoDem, announced this in an interview published on The gallery last Sunday, six months pregnant, after starting the PMA process – medically assisted procreation – with her partner.

THE August 2, 2021while only heterosexual couples could benefit from it, the bioethics law, which opens up in particular the PMA to single women and female couples, has been promulgated. Since then the requests have exploded: from single women and couples of women, 15,000 The first consultations were carried out in 2022, compared to around 3,000 in 2021.

However, despite the law and the request, difficulties remain for single and/or lesbian women: impossibility of making an appointment, age requirements that are too limited, stocks of gametes poorly distributed across the territory, etc.

In the interview given to The gallerySarah El Hairy says she is lucky on this last point, in particular:

We were lucky because in the Paris region there is no shortage of gametes, which unfortunately does not happen everywhere in France.

We can only hope that this announcement, coming from a political figure in the media, will democratize and break down the taboos around PMA for all, and get the government to reflect on the inclusion of trans people in bioethics law.
