On Thursday 5 October several personalities from the feminist scene sent an open letter to the UN to include gender segregation in the register of crimes against humanity. Launched by the Atlantic Council and the Global Justice Center, this letter includes, among its signatories, the American politician Hillary Clinton and the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize Malala Yousafzai.
To end it” gender apartheid”
The letter, signed by several prominent Afghan activists, comes in a context in which the international community appears unable to dissuade the Taliban authorities, in power since August 2021, from tightening the restrictions imposed on women in the country.
“The failure to criminally codify gender apartheid accentuates an accountability gap, leaving victims and survivors without solutions or compensation,” supports the letter, which calls on UN member countries to revise the text of a treaty under discussion on crimes against humanity, incorporating gender segregation.
